Artist Statement
I have been fascinated by painting, specifically oil, since first picking up a paintbrush, over 20 years ago. The history and qualities of this medium provide endless potential and opportunities to engage. I explore the materiality of paint and what can be created from simple pigment and oil. Value is attached to the canvas from the hand upon it, not the actuality of the object.
My environment and the magnificence of the landscape provide inspiration and the focus of my work. The paintings are produced with vigour and intuition, allowing a process of working and refinement to consolidate a truthful response to the subject. The works go beyond material reality to a deeper truth, to glimpse the infinite and that of importance. I explore the contrast of the specific and individual against the vast and impersonal. I acknowledge the diversity, appeal and power of natural universal forces and their unique vastness and timelessness. The works capture subtle sensations, presence and warmth. I wish for the pieces to communicate on many levels; be aesthetically rewarding and convey my celebration of nature and painting itself.
